There’s something quietly magical about walking an oceanside beach, especially when my eyes are tuned to spot sea glass. Each step holds possibility. Each glimmer might be a treasure. Yet over time, I’ve noticed something deeper than the joy of the find; it’s the rhythm of how I look that makes all the difference.
When searching for sea glass, I naturally keep my head down and focus on what’s around my feet. I zoom in.
Zooming in means slowing down. It means my gaze narrows as I scan the sand just a few feet ahead. I search for the subtle sparkle tucked between grains, the imperfect edges, the colors that almost blend in.
This is where the treasures of the sea reveal themselves - not in haste, but in presence. However, if I only ever zoomed in, I would miss something essential. I must also zoom out.
Zooming out requires that I lift my head. It’s only then that I can take in the vastness of the ocean, the curve of the shoreline, and the rhythm of the waves. It reminds me where I am, how far I’ve come, and where I might be heading. It gives context to my steps and perspective to my search.
Life, I’ve found, works much the same way.
There are seasons when we are called to zoom in to tend to the details, to nurture our health, relationships, and daily habits. These are the moments that shape us quietly. The small choices. The thoughts we choose to think. The way we care for our bodies and the words we speak to ourselves. This is where transformation begins - close up, intentional, and sometimes unseen by others.
And then there are times to zoom out.
To reflect on the bigger picture. To ask ourselves: Where am I going?
Does this path feel aligned with who I am becoming? Am I moving toward what truly matters? Zooming out helps us realign. It gives us the courage to shift direction if needed and the gratitude to appreciate how far we’ve already traveled.
If we stay too zoomed in, we can become overwhelmed by the details or lose sight of purpose. If we stay too zoomed out, we risk disconnecting from the daily actions that actually move us forward.
The beauty is in the balance.
On the beach, the seasoned sea glass hunter doesn’t rush. They move with a gentle awareness, eyes scanning the ground, then lifting to the horizon, then back again. It becomes almost like a dance. And in that dance, not only do they find more treasures, but they also enjoy the experience more deeply.
What if we approached life the same way?
What if we honored both perspectives—the intimate and the expansive? The step in front of us and the greater journey unfolding?
Today, whether you’re walking along the shore or simply moving through your day, try this: pause and notice where your focus is. Are you too caught up in the details? Or perhaps drifting too far into the big picture without grounded action?
Then gently adjust as needed and enjoy the views! Trust the process and become your best self!
